While I am no fan of Donald Trump, I must admit that he’s right. America is a nation in decline. Internationally, we’ve lost our status as the global beacon of democracy and leader of the free-world; while at home, millions of hard-working Americans have seen their wages stagnate even as the economy continues to grow. Right now, economic mobility is lower than at any other point in our recent history, leaving the american dream inaccesible to anyone who wasn’t born with the name Gates, Winfrey, or Buffett. But, rediscovering our former greatness cannot be accomplished by winding back the clock or turning against each other. We must show compassion for all victims of oppression and hate. We must regain the moral high ground when dealing with external threats to our democracy and not compromise our values in times of fear and anguish. We must forge a new American dream that showers prosperity on everyone, not just those at the top of the social ladder.
